Teammates’ front-row battle keeps TRP fans on their feet
TUCSON — F.A.S.T. Racing teammates Loren “Sheff” Sheffield of
Tucson and Tom Mikla of Gilbert stole the show Saturday at Tucson Raceway Park with a door to door battle for the lead in the Factory Stock main event.
The scheduled 50-lap feature race was shortened to 20 after only four drivers showed up to compete.
Loren “Sheff” Sheffield of Tucson gets out of his car after
winning the Factory Stock main event Saturday at Tucson
Raceway Park. Sheffield and defending Factory Stock
Champion Tom Mikla of Gilbert raced door to door until the
final lap, when the two hit resulting in flat tires on both cars.
Sheffield still managed to finish first and Mikla second.
(Kristi O’Brien-Herald/Review)
The low car count was no indication of the action-packed race
that was about to take place.
Sheffield took the early lead with Mikla, the defending Factory Stock champion, close behind.
The teammates raced door to door lap after lap with both doing their best not to touch the other.
On lap 18, Mikla came sliding out of turn four but the drivers maintained control of their vehicles to avoid contact.
Both hungry for the win, what seemed to be inevitable occurred on the 19th lap when the drivers hit resulting in a left side flat for Sheffield’s No. 96 and a right side flat on
Mikla’s No. 95 “Lightning McQueen” ride.
With a full lap to go, both cars hobbled their way to the finish line with Sheffield taking the win and Mikla taking second.
Ken Hunt finished third and Leo Bernier rounded out the field in fourth.
Joe Paladenic of Hereford had some kinks to work out after finishing fifth in the first Late Model heat race.
With Rick Butler of Tucson on the pole, Paladenic started third in the main event. The 63-team appeared to have made the right adjustments when on the first lap,
Paladenic took second from Duane Hunt Jr. of Tucson and headed to the inside line in an attempt to take the lead from Butler.
After making numerous attempts to take the top spot, Paladenic tucked back behind Butler on the ninth lap.
With 11 laps completed, Paladenic took another shot at the lead making it stick on the 12th lap.
The first caution came on lap 13 when Mike Egurola of Tucson spun in turn four. All avoided the spun car and racing got back under way with Paladenic in the lead, Butler
in second and Scott Rueschenberg of Mesa in third.
On the restart Rueschenberg took second, but Paladenic had opened up a three-carlength lead.
On lap 17, Rueschenberg was closing the gap on Paladenic, and by lap 21 he was on the Hereford driver’s rear bumper.
Paladenic was able to hold off the No. 25 until lap 30 when Rueschenberg took over the lead passing on the inside. Paladenic held on to second.
“I wasn’t happy with the handling of the car in the heat race. When it came to the main event, it was pure determination,” Paladenic said on Monday. He added that the
team was unsure of which adjustment to make to the Monte Carlo so he adjusted his driving.
Brian O’Brien of Hereford was one of two Modified drivers on the track Saturday. O’Brien also was experiencing handling problems on the No. 63 during the heat race. He
finished second.
After making a few adjustments, O’Brien started the main event in the pole position. Chris Stress of Tucson took the early lead from O’Brien, who settled in second for the
duration of the race.
In other main event racing, Joshua Davis dominated the Sports Compact main event for back to back wins.
Suave Brachowski was the winner in the INEX Legend main and Michael “Spike” Cionni took the checkered flag for the INEX Bandolero division.
Racing resumes on March 15 with the NASCAR Late Models, Factory Stocks, Sports Compacts, Bombers and Bomber Lites.
